CHANGING LIVES - NOT JUST TEACHING FACTS
The Bible and Ancient Thought
Key Moments – Key People – Key Ideas
Understanding the "key moments" of the past gives us understanding of our present. Understanding our present gives us wisdom for making decisions which may influence the future. While other history prgorams detail such key moments, World Views of the Western World goes one step further. In order to understand world views it is necessary to associate the key moments with the thinking, that is, the thoughts and ideas, the world views of the people who shaped and directed those moments. It is not enough to know the important dates and events of history. We must always be drawing our understanding back to the basic way of looking at life – the world view – held by those men and women who shaped our past. If our children are to have any hope of standing firm in Christ in the post-modern society in which they live, they must study World Views of the Western World.
WORLD VIEW LIBRARY EDITIONS
The World View Library Edition of The Iliad and The Odyssey provides special insight into the thinking of Homer and the Greco-Roman world view.
The Butler Edition:
We have chosen the Butler edition of The Iliad and The Odyssey for Year I of World Views
of the Western World. “Rendered into English Prose for the use of those who cannot read
the original.” It was Butler’s desire to help bring this classic literature to life for the English
reader.
A few words about the format of this edition:
The main body of each page presents the classic story in a clear, easy to read, concise
format, while the outside margins contain summary headings, definitions, commentary, and
other study helps. The World View Library Edition of The Iliad and The Odyssey will make
the study of World Views of the Western World much easier.
Every great work of art will communicate not just beauty, but also ideas about the world
we live in. And so, we encourage you to think carefully and ask questions while reading. What
ideas are presented in this work? What do the characters and situations say about the
nature of man and the universe? Is there a God, according to the text? If so, what is He
like? And what happens to man after death? These are just a few of the questions we must
consider as we think Biblically.
We are committed to making complex ideas understandable. The World View Library Edition will help to accomplish this goal.
May God grant wisdom and understanding as you “examine everything carefully and embrace those things which are good” (I Thessalonians 5:17).
